WHAT IS A PROSTHODONTIST?
A Prosthodontist is experienced to manage numerous complex dental issues. All available treatment options are discussed in detail with the patient after diagnosis. The Prosthodontist will then commence to improve the patient’s oral function and aesthetics as per treatment plan. This may include, although not limited to, altering the height of teeth, reconstruction of natural teeth and replacement of missing teeth with various types of substitutes.
WHY SHOULD I SEE A PROSTHODONTIST?
A Prosthodontist is a specialist dentist. After completing a degree in general dentistry, another degree must be obtained in Prosthodontics. It is one of thirteen dental specialities recognised in Australia. Prosthodontists gain further experience as they treat patients in this area every day after completing specialised training. Hence they are the preferred professionals to consult for the Prosthodontics treatment.

WHAT IS A PERIODONTIST?
To become a Periodontist, five years of university, followed by three years of full-time specialty training must be completed. Specialists must meet strict guidelines and demonstrate exceptional skill-sets, and be registered with a variety of professional organizations in order to practice. Specialized equipment is used during your visits, some being single use only. Strict guidelines are adhered to go above and beyond Australian requirements in infection control.
WHY SHOULD I SEE A PERIODONTIST?
Periodontitis, periodontal disease or gum disease involves a deep bacterial infection of the gums caused by various germs found in dental plaque. Over time, this leads to the progressive loss of attachment between the teeth and the supporting gums. Eventually, without treatment, you become “long in the tooth” and your teeth can even fall out!
Periodontal treatment for gum disease improves oral health, not just focusing on a single tooth, and reduces the chances of further complex and expensive treatment being required. Gum disease is linked to general health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and pregnancy complications. Untreated gum disease can lead to significant ongoing costs with teeth, including root canals, extractions, bridges, and large fillings.
Despite improvements in dental care, people still suffer tooth loss – mostly due to tooth decay, gingivitis or periodontitis, or injury. Previously, the only treatment options available for people with missing teeth were bridges and dentures. Now luckily, dental implants are available. Dental implants are replacement tooth roots which provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth.
WHEN SHOULD I SEE A PERIODONTIST?
You need to see a periodontist if you have:
✽ Swollen red gums that bleed easily
✽ Gums that have shrunk from teeth
✽ Persistent bad breath
✽ A bad taste in your mouth
✽ Abscesses between teeth and gums
✽ Loose or sensitive teeth
Gum disease is a very common disease. Some people are more susceptible to it, some have a family history, some have it in combination with other diseases, some as a result of factors such as smoking, and in others, it’s hard to ascertain a cause. If it is not treated, no matter the cause, damage to your oral health will become increasingly apparent.
